4th Gen Explorer

The fourth-generation Ford Explorer debuted with a revised interior and exterior, boasting a modern style and an improved frame. Once again, shoppers could choose the 210-horsepower V6 engine. The V8 now produced 292 horsepower for maximum performance. It worked in conjunction with a six-speed automatic transmission for a smooth, powerful ride.

Enhanced safety features available in this used Ford Explorer brought passenger protection to the next level. The newly standard stability control system helped ensure driver authority over difficult road conditions. These models also included front-seat side airbags for enhanced safety during a collision.

This generation saw a few important changes over the years. In 2008, Ford introduced its voice-activated Sync system, giving drivers hands-free access to infotainment features. A year later, the navigation system was revised to deliver improved turn-by-turn directions.

3rd Gen Explorer

These models came with a longer wheelbase for increased passenger space. An independent rear suspension contributes to the Explorer's solid, confident performance. Four trim models - the XL, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited - offered an excellent array of comfort and convenience features. During this generation, shoppers could choose between three engines. The base V6 provided 160 horsepower for quick, smooth acceleration. Beginning in 1997, a V6 engine was available to increase output to 210 horses. A 5.0-liter V8 engine also produced 210 horses.
